Realizing the Truth

Realizing the Truth

Benny

What is truth? was one of the questions Pilate posed to Jesus during his trial. It is quite challenging to define ‘what is truth’ when there are multiple truths in society. Like Pilate, human beings are searching for the absolute truth. The Bible claims that the sole personification of truth is Jesus. “I am the way and the truth and the life” is one of the seven “I Am” statements of Jesus (John: 14:6). Jesus proclaimed that He was the one path to the Father and that He alone was the way, the truth, and the life. The only way to salvation and eternal life with God is by Jesus. Jesus was declaring His deity in an indirect way. The term ‘truth’ refers to his identity as the Messiah or the Absolute Truth. According to the gospel of John, the concept of ‘truth’ meant that Jesus was the Jewish Messiah, that he was divine, that he died on the cross to atone for the sins of others, that he rose from the dead, and that he went to heaven. It stands for the real identity of Jesus. Hence, truth is a person, not a concept. When Jesus declares himself to be the truth, he claims that all human searches will come to an end in him. He is the source of everything human beings are seeking. Further, Jesus can answer all our questions. When Jesus declares himself to be truth, he is inviting us to turn to him in order to find answers to our uncertainties, doubts, and crises. Many have turned to him and realized the absolute truth throughout the course of history. Jesus is providing an opportunity. Our responsibility is to ensure that we do not miss the way, the truth, and the life that Jesus offers.
